Why "Get In Shape?"

Well, because it’s January and it’s a new year, and you’re supposed to start each new year with the right attitude. Fair enough, but there must be other reasons to get in shape. Here are a few examples:

1) Create a better you. Maybe you are not at your ideal weight and you recognize that being over (or under) your best body weight is not healthy. The more healthy you become, the better you will feel and the better your life will be overall. Come on, give it a try.

2) You have overdone it (again) during the holidays. All that good food was just sitting there going to waste (waist?) and you thought about all those starving children in China. Just as your Mom told you when you were young, those poor Chinese children would love to have what you have, so go on and eat up – clean your plate. I always cleaned my plate, so I assume that there are a lot of fat Chinese children.

3) Your clothes don’t fit anymore, and you don’t have the money for a new wardrobe. It is much more sensible to get to your ideal weight so that your clothes fit properly. Chances are, it wasn’t just the holidays that made you "plump up", it was the other eleven months of the year, too. Make some changes in your dietary habits. Think about that treadmill, or bowflex, that you use only for hanging the laundry. These pieces of equipment can do double duty as exercise equipment. No, really, I saw someone do that once.

4) Better comfort. Let’s face it, if you are overweight, you probably feel uncomfortable. As you drop the pounds to get to your ideal weight, you will find that you will feel more comfortable. Getting in and out of the car will not be an ordeal. Did you ever see a three hundred pound person sitting in the rear seat of a car – and the bumper was hitting the ground? Think of those poor springs!

5) You want that health insurance. At work, most people have some sort of health coverage. Usually you get covered simply because you work there, but things are getting more complicated nowadays and the insurance companies may start requiring the people that they insure be within certain parameters of health. For instance, they could require blood pressure, triglycerides, bodyweight, and a whole host of other things to be equal to certain "norms". If you get in shape, your chances of getting turned down are minimized.

6) Respect for your family and friends. Would you want to see someone you cared about not treating themselves well? Probably not. We all like to see our family and friends in good health and happy. When our family and friends look at us, we want them to see a vibrant, happy, healthy person. The best way to make that happen is to get in shape – and stay that way. Show respect for yourself as well as those around you. If you have children, you will want to demonstrate good habits for them to follow.

7) If for no other reason, get in shape because it’s January, and it’s a new year, and you’re supposed to start each new year with the right attitude, right?
