The concept of fast food, and the fast food restaurant, is enticing. Wouldn’t it be great if we could actually go to a small restaurant, sit in our car, order through a small window, and be on our way in a matter of minutes? No. The whole idea of eating has nothing to do with speed. If our life is so fast-paced that we need to eat on the run, then our life needs some adjustment. Certain things make sense, other things don’t make sense. When we fool around with our health, we are not doing right by ourselves. Fast food is bad for us. It gives our bodies harmful elements that may taste good (really, they don’t) but once inside there is little or nothing for the body to use to operate in a healthy manner. Gradually, if we eat enough of this type of food, the body breaks down and we can become deathly ill. One good documentary that illustrates this destruction of health is "Supersize Me", by Morgan Spurlock. In the movie Morgan eats nothing but fast food for one month to test what happens to a normal, healthy body when exposed to only this type of food. As expected, his health failed and he was told by three separate doctors to cease eating fast food and to start eating normally.
So, what is wrong with fast food? Almost everything. The bread is made from bleached flour (white bread), the meat is low grade and it is fried, all the desserts are laden with sugar, as is the meat; the small amounts of tomato and lettuce are the only bits of real food available. The two worst things that people eat in great abundance, sugar and fat, are the main ingredients in fast food. Sugar wreaks our bodies in a number of ways, makes our children hyperactive, and destroys the body’s balance of nutrients. Add to this that the food is sold with toys and other junk to entice the kids to bother their parents to buy fast food. Constant advertisements bombard us daily and a hectic lifestyle forces people to try to make do with a quick burger and fried potatoes. It doesn’t work. Fast food is killing the consumers, the greed of the companies selling this garbage is insatiable, and it seems no one really cares about improving their health – or their family’s health.
There is no substitute for real food cooked in the proper fashion. Food should never be fried, only grilled, baked, or broiled. Vegetables and fruit should be eaten raw. Salt, sugar, and other condiments should never be used because they destroy the real food. The best food is prepared at home by people who really care about their loved ones. Stay away from fast food places; they are not your friends.
