Normally we think of a car as an expensive thing; it is expensive to buy and expensive to operate. It is possible to save money with the family car if we think in terms of what costs can be lowered in the operation of our vehicles. Here’s a couple ways to lower daily costs while operating your car.
- When you are stuck in traffic for very long periods of time, it might be a good idea to turn off the engine. This procedure will save gas. Idling the engine for several minutes without moving the car will burn as much gas as restarting it. The wear and tear on the engine will be lower too because the engine will not be creating heat. Just think of all those moving parts under the hood. Any moving part creates heat and friction while operating, and these two things will cause excessive wear on parts that we will have to pay to replace. Judge the time period that you will have to sit with the engine idling. If it is more than a few minutes, decide if it will be safe to shut the engine off. If so, then save your engine, and some money, by turning off the car during the extended wait.
- In the summertime the heat can be unbearable, especially in places like Florida in August. Having to drive in the heat with the air conditioner running is an absolute necessity. However, if conditions are not too bad (Florida in December, for example), consider not using the air conditioner when you drive. The car’s air conditioner has several moving parts and it has a pressurized system. There is a lot of heat created under the hood. The engine has to work overtime to provide power to run the air conditioning system. The more effort put forth by the engine, the more gas is consumed. We can save gas and money by considering the alternative to running the air conditioning all the time. Some folks just open the car’s windows to allow fresh air inside the car. Of course, everyone is different, so each of us must decide when the temperature outside calls for open windows, or the air conditioning.
